Chamberlain better in 6-3 victory

New York's Joba Chamberlain bows his head to pray for a fan who was injured by a foul ball. Chamberlain helped pitch the Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the Royals on Sunday in New York.

? The second start of Joba Chamberlain’s big-league career was different than the first.

It was longer. It was better. It was less of an event and more of a game. He had better control of his fastball. He threw more curveballs. He threw three changeups and had to be talked out of throwing more by Jorge Posada.

And the biggest difference? The Yankees won.

Chamberlain threw 78 pitches in 95-degree heat and allowed three runs (two earned) in 41â3 innings as the New York Yankees beat the Kansas City Royals at Yankee Stadium, 6-3.

The Yankees have won four of their last five since losing to the Toronto Blue Jays in Chamberlain’s starting debut.

“His arm’s electric, and hopefully one of these days, soon we’ll be able to get him out to five innings, then six and seven,” said Johnny Damon, the most outspoken internal critic of the Yankees’ plan to turn Chamberlain into a starter. “He’s going to be a tremendous starter.”
