Raiders clip Hutchinson, secure tourney’s top seed

? It was a bit of a sloppy game defensively for the Lawrence Raiders, but the team’s bats supplied enough runs to compensate in a 9-5 victory over Hutchinson on Saturday at the Emporia Legion baseball tournament.

Only two of Hutchinson’s runs were earned. Raiders starting pitcher Alex Hardman went all seven innings and struck out three while issuing just one walk.

Ben Wilson and Travis Sanders each hit home runs for Lawrence.

“Ben’s just been on fire for us,” Raiders coach Shaun Edmondson said of his high-powered first baseman.

Matthew Abel hit his second home run of the summer for the Raiders. And just like his first, Saturday’s was of the inside-the-park variety. The speedy center fielder also had three stolen bases.

The Raiders (4-0) earned the No. 1 seed and will play a 9 a.m. game today against an opponent to be determined. If they win the morning matchup, the Raiders will play in the championship game at 7 p.m.
