Only 19 people still without power

At height of outage, 1,735 people near downtown were without power

UPDATE: As of 9:50 a.m., only 19 people near downtown were still without power.

About 1,735 customers are without power in Douglas County Thursday morning, according to Wester Energy.

Susan Maycock, a Westar energy spokeswoman, said crews were on the scene and power was expected to be back on sometime around 10 a.m. Maycock said the outage occurred because trees interfered with transformers and power lines.

The outage occurred at 6:48 a.m. The number of customers affected was as of 8:35 a.m.

The outage area is bounded by Massachusetts Street on the east and the KU campus on the west. It’s bounded by 10th Street to the north and 17th Street to the south. One witness described hearing three large booms shortly before the power went out.

Areas farther north on Massachusetts reported lights flickering but remaining on.
