UPDATE: As of 9:50 a.m., only 19 people near downtown were still without power.
About 1,735 customers are without power in Douglas County Thursday morning, according to Wester Energy.
Susan Maycock, a Westar energy spokeswoman, said crews were on the scene and power was expected to be back on sometime around 10 a.m. Maycock said the outage occurred because trees interfered with transformers and power lines.
The outage occurred at 6:48 a.m. The number of customers affected was as of 8:35 a.m.
The outage area is bounded by Massachusetts Street on the east and the KU campus on the west. It's bounded by 10th Street to the north and 17th Street to the south. One witness described hearing three large booms shortly before the power went out.
Areas farther north on Massachusetts reported lights flickering but remaining on.
More updates as they become available.

The booms reported were probably a transformer going out. Somebody needs to tell Weststar that the storm is tonight, not last night.

Power outage has happened a couple of times in the past couple of months in this area.
Is there going to be a permanent solution?

Power came back on about 9:15 at 12th and Ohio. Let's see if we get a round two for a power outage this evening when the storms arrive, lol.

Yeah, the area I live in (7th and Florida area) loses power all the time too, it doesn't matter what the conditions are. I've also complained several times to Westar and they don't give a damn. Westar really is a sub-par company in service and customer support. Give me options!

****
That would have been the terrorists directing the lightning to the gas tank in KC. “How to shut down a major airport with one bolt!”
