Old Home Town - 100 years ago

July 31, 2008

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 31, 1908: "Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Albach celebrated their golden wedding anniversary today. They have lived here 50 years and came to Lawrence direct from Germany. They had many harrowing experiences during and after the Quantrill raid. : The body of 12-year-old Harry Westfall, who drowned while swimming in the Kaw River here, was found by chance by a fisherman today. The boy had drifted considerably downstream. : The Hosford Investment Co. is doing something never before equaled in local real estate history. Lots in a local subdivision are being sold on payments as low as $10 cash and a balance of $1 a week. This is an entire novelty in the local market. Further, no interest is charged on deferred payments. A little down and a little a week could spur considerable building here."
