The SHED strategy

If you want to, need to or are being forced to make a big life change, it’s probably a good time to SHED, as identified by Julie Morgenstern in “When Organizing Isn’t Enough.” This four-step “clean-up” program helps you release attachments to obsolete items and time-wasting habits. SHED stands for: Separate the treasures, Heave the trash, Embrace your identity and Drive yourself forward. Among the tips:

¢ If you feel that a better future is possible but aren’t sure what it is, or if what you want seems out of reach, or if you feel weighed down by old habits, obligations and stuff, it’s time to SHED.

¢ A life theme or vision will organize your thoughts and actions and pave the way for your SHED program. Common life themes include: connection, creativity, developing wisdom, health or adventure.

¢ Five habits that clutter our lives: mindless escapes (like television), procrastination, perfectionism, chronic lateness and workaholism. Heave these habits to make room for your theme/vision of the future.
