From the Lawrence Daily World for July 28, 1908: “William Howard Taft, the Republican nominee for president, was formally notified of his selection as the party’s choice today. : No class ever graduated from the University of Kansas has ever had more of its members run for office immediately after leaving school than the law seniors of 1908. Most are seeking the job of county attorney. : William Randolph Hearst declared today he would not accept an Independent Party offer to run for president. William Jennings Bryan is the Democratic nominee. : A crowd of more than 3,000 heard W.R. Stubbs, our Republican candidate for governor, yesterday at the biggest political meeting ever held in Douglas County. The gathering was in South Park and no local crowd has ever been more receptive to a candidate.”
