West edges East in Shrine Bowl

? Remington’s Cole Cherryholmes hit Dodge City’s Mykael Thompson in the right corner of the end zone for a two-point conversion with less than half a minute to play, and the West edged the East, 29-28, in the Shrine Bowl on Saturday night at Welch Stadium.

The West took a 21-14 lead at the end of the third quarter when Cherryholmes hit Thompson for a 31-yard pass on a flea-flicker, but the East took advantage of two West turnovers to score two fourth-quarter touchdowns.

And the East stopped the West in the final two minutes, but a roughing-the-passer call prolonged a drive, and Cherryholmes connected with Andale’s Ethan Ungles to pull the West within 28-27 with 20 seconds left. Rather that settle for a tie – the annual all-star high school football game doesn’t allow overtime – the West went for two and succeeded.
