Old Home Town – 40 years ago
Two men wearing masks made from shirts and carrying .22-caliber guns robbed the Holiday Inn at 2307 Iowa and fled about 1:30 p.m. They got $116.68 in cash. There were three people in the lobby at the time of the holdup and they were forced into a rest room after which the two men fled.
The local Sidewalk Bazaar planners ignored gray skies and new threats of rain and conducted their event after a day’s delay due to miserable weather. Traffic built up quickly and crowds and sales were reported as good.
A local street dance designed as part of the Sidewalk Bazaar had to be halted early when a 16-year-old was assaulted and had to be treated for a broken nose. Several said the clash had racial overtones.
