The local school board was targeting high school graduation requirements, merit pay, teacher competency exams, student competency testing and the gifted student program as key items for discussion in the coming academic year.

As many as 10,000 Kansas University students, men and women alike, who were receiving federal financial aid would have to sign statements that they had complied with draft registration laws within the next few weeks. The statements had to be signed before students could get grants, federal-work study referrals or loans. The new deadline was Sept. 1.
