Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 27, 1908: “The Douglas County wheat crop will run between four and five bushels per acre under that of last year, according to local wheat buyers. Current yields are about 15 bushels per acre. The wheat is of good quality but shipments are very light since many farmers are holding the grain back waiting for higher prices. : There is no shortage of teachers in Douglas County as has been reported, according to county superintendent Bowman. He said there are more than enough qualified people to fill all openings. : W.R. Stubbs arrived home from a long campaign swing and said he is confident he will get the Republican nomination for governor. : John F. Schulz, 86, died at his home in Eudora. He was one of the oldest and best-known county farmers and had lived in our vicinity for more than 40 years. : The colored citizens of Douglas County are planning a big political celebration at South Park tonight. The Kansas primary election law and issues of the present election are to be discussed, leaders say.”
