John Berkowitz, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, by earning a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher during the spring 2008 semester at Coe. He is a 2007 graduate of Free State High School and the son of David and Katherine Berkowitz.
¢Thomas Bush and John Parker Jr., both of Lawrence, graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees with Special Attainments in Commerce from Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va. The commencement exercises were June 5 on the front lawn of the university.
Bush majored in business administration. He was the founder and president of Club Baseball, member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and made the honor roll and dean’s list his junior year. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bush, Lawrence.
Parker majored in business administration. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Parker, Lawrence.
¢The Old West Lawrence Neighborhood Association announces the first round of 2008 Applause Awards, which recognize homeowners for making improvements to their properties that add to the neighborhood’s beauty.
Keith and Jennie Skillman, 715 Tenn., removed yews and planted beds of perennials. Grasses, yucca, sedum and a sumac tree complement the front walk. A small bed by the sidewalk and one running along the picket fence separate the front and back yards.
Sally Hare-Schriner, 824 Ohio, painted the two-story Victorian a dusty peach and aqua. A new brick walkway has been added and a perennial bed along the foundation.
Stephen Maceli and John Connolly, 714 Ill., were recognized for their deep blue bungalow that sits on a double lot and an unobtrusive chain link fence that allows their dogs to run freely. A perennial bed runs along the front of the fence and is filled with shrubs that will form a screen for the yard as they mature.
Amy Stuber and Matt Patterson, 820 Mo., painted their former white house to a pale olive and teal with deep red accents. Two window boxes have been added, and lilacs were planted along the driveway.
¢Paige Trimble was chosen to represent Free State High School in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law July 8-13 in Washington, D.C. She joined more than 300 students from all over the country who have been selected for their academic achievements and leadership abilities.
During the forum, she had the opportunity to see the Capitol and visit the Supreme Court. She also participated in a mock trial, learned to be a part of a legal team, spoke with attorneys and attended training workshops and lectures.
Trimble will be a senior at Free State High School in August.
¢ Austin Noll, Lawrence, was awarded a full-tuition, room and board scholarship to attend The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation 2008 Summer Seminar Program at the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Noll attended the first session from June 8-21 and is a student at Free State High School.
¢Friends University, Wichita, announces its May 2008 graduates. The commencement exercises were May 10 at the Kansas Coliseum. Area students earning undergraduate degrees:
Lawrence – Alice Bolivar, Bachelor of Business Administration in business management; Brandon Marlett, Bachelor of Business Administration in business management; Amy Moten, Bachelor of Science in organizational management and leadership; and Dustin Delich, Bachelor of Science in organizational management and leadership.

¢Dewi Sartika, Lawrence, was named a member of Golden Key International Honour Society and Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization, at Kansas University.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in dual majors, accounting and management and leadership with a concentration in entrepreneurship, from Kansas University in May 2008.
She is the daughter of Sartono Sutandi and Jeoh Chenna Yause, in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia.
¢Kalem Kopf, Leslie Rhoton and Alex Rock, all of Lawrence, were named members of Mortar Board, a senior honor society, at Kansas University. The initiation ceremonies were April 13 at the Kansas Union, followed by a reception at the chancellor’s residence.
Membership is based on distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership and service and the students must also have a 3.0 grade-point average.
Kopf is a finance major and the son of Keith Kopf.
Rhoton is an English major and the daughter of Robert and Debbie Rhoton.
Rock is a secondary level education major and the son of Randall and Jane Rock.
¢Jessica Campbell, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list at the University of Evansville in Indiana, by earning a grade-point average of at least 3.5 or higher during the spring 2008 semester.
¢Cecil Transmeier is celebrating his 70th birthday at 6 p.m. today at Zig & Mac’s, 1540 Wakarusa Drive.
¢Alek Joyce, a junior at Free State High School, will participate as a national scholar representing Kansas at the National Youth Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., starting July 19. An invitation has also been extended for Joyce to attend the Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference honoring the 56th United States Presidential Inaugural in January.
He is the son of Jim and Holli Joyce, Lawrence.
¢Members of Liberty Memorial High School Class of 1949 met for their annual summer picnic on June 21. Thirty-three members attended the event. This year it was hosted by Jerry and Janet Seele at their home in Baldwin City.
The Class of 1949 would like to thank the Seeles and the following Baldwin City merchants: Cranberry Market, Mr. Goodcents, Cordoba’s Family Restaurant, Auburn’s Pharmacy, The Lodge and Alice Gurley Avon.
¢Caleb Powers, Lawrence, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history on June 8, 2008, from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H. The ceremony was on the Dartmouth Green.
He is the son of Richard and Cheryl Powers.
¢Nicholas Ludvigson, Baldwin City, earned a Master of Social Work degree on May 17, 2008, from the University of Iowa. The ceremony was at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
¢Casey Rahmeier, Lawrence, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla, on May 17, 2008. The ceremony was in the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building on campus.
He is the son of Robert and DeAnn Rahmeier.
¢Greenville College, Greenville, Ill., announces area students who qualified for honors for the spring 2008 semester.
To qualify for the dean’s list, juniors and seniors must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. A college scholar is a student who has made the dean’s list for three or more consecutive semesters.
Lawrence – Nicole Adema, a senior and music business major, was named to the dean’s list. She is the daughter of Donald and Betty Adema, Lawrence; Katherine Heacock, a senior and music education major, was named to the college scholar list. She is the daughter of Douglas and Carolyn Heacock, Lawrence.
¢The Kansas University art department honored students with $255,370 in scholarships and awards during its annual spring exhibition and competition. A KU faculty committee of Cima Katz (chair), Jerry Lubensky, Alison Luoma and Yoonmi Nam judged the nominated students’ art projects. They were displayed May 4-6 at the Art and Design Building.
Forty art students, including four incoming freshmen, received scholarships and awards of varying amounts.

¢Katie and Eric Capps, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Andrew Charles Capps, born April 7, 2008, in Overland Park.
His maternal grandparents are Bob and Mary Jo Wulf, Bloomington, Ill.
His paternal grandparents are Eva Capps, Lewisburg, Ky., and the late Wayne Capps.
¢Joshua Gaston, Lawrence, graduated May 18, cum laude with departmental honors from Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, with a Bachelor of Science degree in English and minors in business and sociology. He has accepted a position with Hebei University, Shijiazhuang, China, to teach English and American culture courses for the 2008-09 school year as part of the Chinese Cultural Exchange Program sponsored by Drake.
He is a 2004 graduate of Free State High School.
