Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for July 22, 1908: “The Redpath system already is making plans for another Chautauqua here next year since good crowds are attending the events here in 1908. Next year’s program will run for seven days and promises to bring some of the top speakers in the country here. : One of the first things done in a Chautauqua speech by Judge Lee S. Estelle, judge of the juvenile court in Omaha, was to give the Kansas yell, ‘Rock Chalk! Jay Hawk! KU!’ Then he asked the university boys in the audience to join him and it made a big hit with the large crowd. : W.R. Stubbs of Lawrence, the Republican candidate for governor, is planning a big meeting here next week and the county is expected to give ‘her candidate’ a rousing campaign homecoming. It is hard to see how he cannot win the office with ease.”
