A guide to Thursday’s sidewalk sale

Lawrence’s annual downtown Sidewalk Sale is from sunup to sundown Thursday.

Some stores, such as Buckle, 805 Mass., and Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop, 802 Mass., are opening at 5 a.m., but most will open between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. Most businesses will remain open until 9 p.m. The sun is scheduled to rise at 6:10 a.m. and set about 8:45 p.m.

Shoppers might want to head out early to find not only the best merchandise but also beat the heat as temperatures are expected to climb to 93 degrees.

The sale is ripe for bargain hunters, who can find items reduced between 30 percent and 70 percent.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Bill Cory urged people to use caution when driving in the downtown area, where tens of thousands of people are expected to shop.

Jane Pennington, president of Downtown Lawrence Inc., suggested taking advantage of the T’s free service throughout the day.

Journal-World reporters will be filing live reports throughout the day, so be sure to check ljworld.com for updates. Several short live video broadcasts, including bargain-hunting tips, are scheduled for 6:30 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. There also will be photos and other videos updated throughout the day.
