From the Lawrence Daily World for July 14, 1908: H.B. Peairs of Haskell is expected to be a top leader for the newly formed Lawrence Civic League designed to improve government and citizenship. W.C. Simons of the World will be the first vice president with A.C. Mitchell, Prof. A.C. Carruth , C.W. Lynch and A. Art Wood completing the executive committee. The league will have a strong anti-liquor stand and will look to the general moral upbuilding of the community.
