Rethink dry clean only

We could all use ideas for saving a little money: Think twice when you see the warning “Dry Clean Only.” Silk and linen clothing routinely sent to the dry cleaner can be hand-washed or cleaned in a washing machine on a gentle cycle. Use a drying rack or clothesline instead of a dryer to avoid heat damage and reduce ironing time. Spot-cleaning stains also minimizes trips to the cleaners, according to Lindsey Wieber and Gwen Whiting of the Laundress, a company that makes detergent and other fabric-care products. They say the “Dry Clean Only” label protects the clothing manufacturer, not the consumer.
