As Lawrence city commissioners rethink whether to move ahead on the Farmland Industries deal, they’re poised to dive deeper into a controversial industrial development along the Farmers Turnpike.

City commissioners at their Tuesday evening meeting will hear a rezoning request for 155 acres at the northwest corner of North 1800 Road and East 900 Road. The property is immediately north of the Lecompton interchange on the Kansas Turnpike.

A development group led by Lawrence businessmen Duane and Steve Schwada have said the property is ideal for warehouse development because of its proximity to Interstate 70.

But several neighbors have expressed concerns that the area has not been properly planned for industrial development. They’ve also expressed concerns that the developers are seeking too intense of an industrial zoning designation. They’ve proposed a lesser industrial zoning that would allow some warehousing activities but would prohibit some industrial uses.

Neighbors have filed a protest petition, which will force the project to win four of the five votes on the city commission to move forward.

Commissioners previously have been supportive of the developer’s proposals. In mid-June, commissioners approved the annexation of the property on a 4-1 vote.

Commissioners meet at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.
