From the Lawrence Daily World for July 8, 1908: "Nineteen lawns were entered in the home beautification contest this year and A.B. Brewer got the 'prettiest lawn' prize. It would have been quite hard to pick the second best because the entries were so notable. : Railroads are being pushed to continue stops at small towns in the region to prevent the cities from deteriorating."
