National League Roundup: Kuroda tosses L.A. masterpiece

Nomar Garciaparra, left, is congratulated by third-base coach Larry Bowa. The Dodgers defeated the Braves, 3-0, on Monday in Los Angeles.

Dodgers 3, Braves 0

Los Angeles – Hiroki Kuroda took a perfect game into the eighth inning, but settled for a one-hitter against Atlanta.

Kuroda (5-6) retired the first 21 batters before Mark Teixeira lined the right-hander’s 70th pitch into the right-field corner for a double leading off the eighth. He was the only Atlanta base-runner.

Kuroda was attempting to become the first Dodger to throw a no-hitter since countryman Hideo Nomo on Sept. 17, 1996, 9-0 at Colorado. Kuroda, 33, signed with the Dodgers in December as a free agent after 11 seasons with Hiroshima of the Japanese Central League. He threw 91 pitches and struck out six.

Mets 10, Phillies 9

Philadelphia – Pedro Martinez pitched into the sixth inning then watched the Mets nearly give back a nine-run lead before holding on for a one-run victory.

David Wright homered and drove in four runs as the Mets built a 10-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. But three relievers, including closer Billy Wagner, combined nearly to blow it.

The Mets had a 10-7 lead heading into the ninth, and Wagner gave up two runs – barely enough to earn his 20th save in 26 opportunities.

Pirates 10, Astros 7

Pittsburgh – Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit hit home runs for Pittsburgh.

Rockies 4, Brewers 3.

Milwaukee – Ubaldo Jimenez baffled the Brewers and spoiled what had been a day-long welcome to Milwaukee party for CC Sabathia.

Jimenez (4-8) gave up only three hits in seven innings and has won three of his last four starts after beginning the season 1-7.

All-Star Matt Holliday hit his 14th home run – and fourth in four games – for Colorado, which has won six of its last seven.

Prince Fielder hit a two-run homer for Milwaukee off Taylor Buchholz.

Sabathia is scheduled to make his Milwaukee debut tonight after he was acquired in a trade with Cleveland on Monday. He will face Colorado starter Mark Redman (2-3).

Marlins 3, Padres 1

San Diego – Jorge Cantu hit a two-run home run off Greg Maddux, and that was enough for Ricky Nolasco and Florida.

Nolasco (10-4) won his fifth straight decision, holding San Diego to one run and five hits in eight innings. He struck out seven and walked none.

Maddux is 0-4 with seven no-decisions since May 10, when he reached 350 wins.
