St. Petersburg, Fla. – James Shields scattered five hits over 61â3 innings, and B.J. Upton and Gabe Gross homered Monday to help Tampa Bay beat Boston to open a 11â2-game lead in the AL East.

Minneapolis – Curtis Granderson knocked in the go-ahead RBI.

Chicago – Nick Swisher homered from both sides of the plate.

Blue Jays 2, Mariners 0

Seattle – Roy Halladay pitched his 10th career shutout, dominating the Mariners and limiting them to just four singles in Toronto’s victory.

It was the Blue Jays’ third straight win.

Athletics 6, Angels 1

Anaheim, Calif. – Rookie Greg Smith threw a four-hitter, Eric Chavez hit a two-run double, and the Athletics beat Los Angeles to pull within 31â2 games of the Angels in the AL West.

Smith (5-6) struck out three and walked two in his second complete game in 16 big-league starts.

It was his first victory in six starts against American League West teams.
