Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 30, 1908: ” ‘Haskell Institute will be the last, or about the last, of the non-reservation Indian schools to be abolished, and that will not be for a number of years, if at all,’ said Supt. H.B. Peairs today. There have been reports that the government is to abandon Indian schools under the Bureau of Indian Affairs and much concern and uneasiness has been created here. : There were only small crowds for all the Kansas Day events in Topeka the past few days but new Republican policies about curtailing free passes have cut down from the usual attendance.”
