Snow, carried along by winds gusting up to 35 mph, caused wind chills to plummet to near zero degrees and made roads slick today in the Lawrence area.

The snow had tapered off shortly after 1 p.m. and it is expected to end by 2 p.m., said Scott Whitmore, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Topeka. Earlier blowing snow reduced visibility to no more than a mile, Whitmore said.

At least one school district – Tonganoxie – closed early, at 1:30 p.m.

St. Thomas Aquinas has canceled its freshman basketball game originally scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today at South. It will not be rescheduled. And Free State’s junior varsity basketball game against Olathe North this evening has been canceled.

Douglas County emergency dispatchers said they had received 15 reports of traffic accidents, all minor, by midday.

Lawrence city street crews were treating the streets.

Shortly before 6 a.m. the temperature at Lawrence Municipal Airport was 55 degrees. By 1 p.m. it had dropped to 14 degrees.
