Old Home Town – 40 years ago

A local group was due to appear before the Joint Council on Recreation in Topeka to try to get state or federal help for construction of the Lawrence municipal swimming pool. Mayor Dick Raney, Chamber of Commerce President Dolph Simons Jr. and City Manager Ray Wells headed the group. At least $50,000 was being sought.

The city primary election wasn’t until August, but political activity already was heating up. Filings had increased and other prospects “had their ears to the ground” to feel out sentiment about their chances for victory.

The County Commission said the 23rd and Haskell intersection was a “rural traffic problem” and was trying to devise ways to improve safety at the locale.

Kansas University Endowment Association was moving from Strong Hall to 1317 La., the site of the former KU Faculty Club.
