Bill introduced to expand mail balloting

? A House committee expects to consider a bill allowing counties to hold all of their elections by mail.

The Elections and Governmental Organization Committee introduced the measure Thursday. Chairman and Topeka Republican Mike Burgess said it agreed to sponsor the bill for elections officials who think it could boost turnout.

Current law allows counties to use mail ballots for ballot issues, such as whether a school district should be permitted to issue bonds for a construction project. But it prohibits counties from using them for any election filling local, state or federal office.

Burgess said one issue is whether mail ballots are as secure as ballots cast at polling places.

He said he expects his panel to have hearings.
