Baldwin Invitational features top talent

Saturday morning, 12 wrestling squads from across Kansas and as far away as Oak Park, Mo., will invade Baldwin City for the seventh annual Baldwin Invitational Tournament.

The event, which will take place at Baldwin Junior High, features seven teams ranked in the top 15 Kansas, along with Oak Park High, which is ranked No. 1 in Missouri Class 4.

Oak Park enters as the three-time defending champion.

Host Baldwin currently is ranked fifth in Kansas’ Class 4A and is joined by Santa Fe Trail, which his ranked sixth.

Area schools Mill Valley and Tonganoxie also will compete at the event.

Individually, the BIT is loaded with talent. The 112-pound weight class includes three high school All-Americans: Baldwin’s Alan Callahan, Paola’s Sharky Slyter and Oak Park’s Cody Tyler.

Also of interest at this year’s event is the anticipated induction of Jay Harris into the Baldwin Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Harris, the older brother of current BHS coach Kit Harris, was the school’s first state wrestling champion. He finished 34-0 at 132 pounds during the 1986-87 season.

The BIT will begin at 9 a.m., with the finals slated for 4:30 p.m.
