Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 24, 1908: “W.R. Stubbs’ proposals for a Kansas primary election setup went through the House and got torn up in the Senate in Topeka. Things seem to be no further along than they were. : The Gulley and Gulley grocery store here was badly damaged by fire early today despite efforts of many to help carry out stock and beat down flames. It appears there is insurance coverage for the stock but whether the building was covered is uncertain. : The visiting Nome Arctic Brotherhood basketball team, which beat the university team recently, defeated the local YMCA team here last night and continues to dominate the region. : The first performance of the Juvenile Minstrels was given at the Opera House last night and turned out to be one of the most successful programs ever given here. A second performance is due tonight.”
