From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 21, 1908: “The City Council met last night and took action to be sure that all the buildings and facilities of the ‘nickel’ theaters in town are safe for customers. The five-cent theaters have become quite popular and more regulation apparently is needed. : There have been a number of fires of late due to careless handling of heating equipment. Fortunately, none has been serious and there have been no injuries, but caution is advised at all times by fire experts.”
