Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 13, 1908: “The entire southwest end of the Union Rail Depot in Kansas City was destroyed by fire early today. Crossed electric wires appear to have been the cause. So far, loss is estimated at more than $250,000 although many contend it will go far beyond that considering the cost of repairs and replacement. :The American fleet of 16 battleships put in at Rio de Janeiro today and plans are to end up in the ocean in the area of Japan. The voyage around both Americas now appears to be about one-third completed and Uncle Sam’s presence on the seas is being firmly established. : Growth at the Baldwin State Bank has been good enough that another full-time assistant cashier was voted in at the annual meeting. Charles Beeks is to fill the new position.”
