Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 12, 1908: “A coroner’s inquest has been called after a chemist found poison in the stomach of Vailla Vancil, suspected of having been poisoned by her husband. The coroner has issued a warrant for the arrest of the husband and he is to be arraigned soon. ‘Enough arsenic to kill’ was found in the stomach by Prof. Bailey of the university. : Local people voted to the local chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the academic honor group, are Otto August Barteldes, Cora Emmett Dolbee, Mattie Kent, Evadne Marie Laptad and Burton Peabody Sears. This is a highly coveted honor and they are to be congratulated heartily. : The local YMCA held its second anniversary for the ‘new’ building and the agency and its facilities have been of great value to the community. : W.R. Stubbs opened his campaign for the Republican nomination for governor in Emporia last night and he has strong support of many top people, including Emporia editor William Allen White.”
