Around and about

Several area residents completed Kansas University’s Global Awareness Program during the summer and fall 2007 semesters.

Students from Lawrence include Bree Ashley Beasley, Thomas Arthur Duermeier, Geoffrey Douglas Knight, Collin Maxfield Paley, Mariah E. Richardson, Brian Stephen Segebrecht, Caitlin Elizabeth Shanks and Brenna Lane Spurgeon.

Lara Ann Kindle, Basehor, also completed the program.

The program recognizes students for studying abroad, taking courses with an international focus, learning foreign languages and being significantly involved in international cocurricular activities. All undergraduates are eligible to participate.

Jeffrey James List, Lawrence, was a candidate for graduation at Bowling Green State University in December. He was expected to receive a Master of Arts. The university, in Bowling Green, Ohio, conducted its fall commencement ceremonies Dec. 14 and 15.

Several area students were honored at the Heart of America Chess Association’s Holiday Tournament, conducted Dec. 1 in Independence, Mo.

Cole Reams took second place, and Madison Reams received a medal for 15th place, both in the K-6 division. They also won the third-place team award in K-6. They are students at Quail Run School.

Andrei Elliott, a student at Southwest Junior High School, won the third-place trophy in K-8.

Sam and Diana Campbell, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Gabriel Campbell, born Dec. 11, 2007, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Gabriel’s maternal grandmother is Margaret Folks. His paternal grandparents are Richard and Janet Campbell.

Great-grandparents are Richard Folks, Ira and Elsie Moore, Pat Hopper, and Delbert and Lois Campbell.

Zachary Williams, Law-rence, graduated cum laude from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, on Dec. 15. He received a bachelor’s degree in visual communication design with a minor in Web design and programming.

Williams was recognized by the Honors College and as a Founders Scholar.

Myriam Bloom, Lynne Sauer and Ben Sorofman, all of Lawrence, were named to the dean’s list for grades achieved during the fall 2007 semester at Missouri State University in Springfield. They earned a grade-point average of at least 3.5.

Brandon Sublette, Law-rence, received a Master of Business Administration from Harding University in Searcy, Ark. He majored in management and business ethics. Graduation ceremonies were Dec. 15.

Brian and Carol Birnbaum, Columbus, Ohio, announce the birth of their son, Andrew Fredrick Birnbaum, born Jan. 2, 2008, in Columbus.

Maternal grandparents are Dick and Harriet Shaffer, Lawrence. Paternal grandparents are Fred and Bobbi Birnbaum, Golden, Colo.
