Free parking approved at downtown garage

January 9, 2008

Some downtown parking to be free

The city commission voted on Tuesday night to allow free, ten-hour parking on the top level of the New Hampshire street garage for the next year. Enlarge video

Commissioner unanimously agreed to convert the top deck of the parking garage at Ninth and New Hampshire streets into a free, 10-hour parking lot.

Downtown Lawrence Inc. leaders had suggested making the top deck a free parking area, with the hopes that downtown businesses would encourage their employees to park in the lot.

City commissioners were open to the idea, in part, because a city survey showed that the 135-space parking lot routinely had a vacancy rate of more than 95 percent.

Commissioners agreed to try the program for a year.

Build a new library at 9th and New Hampshire so users could make good use of the parking garage. That would shave $10,000,000 off the price of a new library. Now taxpayers would be looking at a $17.5 million dollar library instead of a $30,000,000, $40,000,000 or $50,000,000 library.

We do not need and do not want a new library. If you and your special interests desire a new library, fully fund it with your own money.

just wanted to pass along this note: the third floor is free starting today, 1.8.08 and city hall will refund any parking passes for this year bought before today. however, there will be no snow removal offered on the third floor, and often times during the winter the city blocks off the third floor- which means we will have to pay to park on another level. no biggie to me, just wanted everyone to know.
