Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 6, 1908: The wife of a local shoemaker died suddenly Saturday night and neighbors say she may have been a victim of a dose of Rough on Rats, an arsenic compound, administered by her husband. A coroner’s inquest is to be held and her stomach will be removed for testing and an autopsy. That is due to take at least two or three days. So far, nobody has been arrested but we can be sure the husband will be watched carefully. . . . The pump station at Scipio has been completed and the danger of a new gas famine, such as the one that practically shut down Topeka recently, seems to have been ended.
