Police charge man, 85, under street-racing law
Toronto ? A new Ontario law that has targeted youthful speedsters and aggressive drivers has bagged a surprise suspect – an 85-year-old man heading to the bank at 100 mph, officials said.
The man, whose name was not released, lost his license and his Oldsmobile for a week.
Police allege the man was clocked Wednesday along Highway 407 north of Toronto at 40 mph over the posted limit of 60 mph.
The new legislation – affecting drivers who exceed the speed limit by at least 31 mph – is aimed at ridding city streets of speeders, racers and aggressive drivers. Offenders lose their license and car for a week and face a $2,000 fine.
