? After a disastrous non-conference season, Cliff Clinkscales and DePaul teammates were more than ready to get the Big East portion of the season under way.

Draelon Burns scored 20 points, and Karron Clarke added 14 as the Blue Demons upset No. 17 Villanova, 84-76, on Thursday night in the conference opener for both teams.

Villanova didn’t start a senior, and their inexperience showed as they never got into a rhythm.

“It almost kind of crept up on us,” said Villanova’s Dante Cunningham, who had 16 points. “We just kept battling and ran out of time.”

No. 5 UCLA 76, No. 24 Stanford 67

Stanford, Calif. – Josh Shipp scored 21 points and sparked a second-half surge for UCLA in the Pac-10 opener for both teams.

Shipp hit five three-pointers, including one with four minutes left that gave the Bruins an 11-point lead.

Russell Westbrook added 15 points for the defending Pac-10 champions, who won their sixth straight game and beat Stanford for the fourth time in five meetings.

No. 2 Memphis 102, Siena 58

Memphis, Tenn. – Jeff Robinson scored 20 points, and Chris Douglas-Roberts added 19 to lead Memphis.

Joey Dorsey hit all five of his shots, scored 12 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked four shots for the Tigers, who won their 39th straight home game.

Memphis connected on 11 shots from three-point range in the first half and built a 25-point lead.

Memphis finished with 11 blocks.

No. 10 Marquette 96, Providence 67

Milwaukee – Dominic James scored 21 points, and Lazar Hayward added 17 for the Golden Eagles in the Big East opener for both teams.

Marquette won its seventh straight game because it was too fast and too deep for Providence, which had a four-game winning streak snapped.

No. 15 Vanderbilt 76, Rice 58

Nashville, Tenn. – Shan Foster had 24 points and five rebounds, and Vanderbilt remained undefeated.

The Commodores forced a season-high 24 turnovers and extended the best start in the program’s 108-year history. Vanderbilt won their first 12 games in 2003-04 en route to the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

No. 21 Arizona 76, Oregon St. 63

Tucson, Ariz. – Jordan Hill had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Arizona pulled away in the teams’ Pac-10 opener.

Oregon State didn’t have starter C.J. Giles, who was benched for disciplinary reasons.

“We could have used C.J. tonight,” Oregon State coach Jay John said, “but when you show up late for two practices it is a pretty easy call.”

California 92, No. 22 USC 82

Berkeley, Calif. – Eric Vierneisel made consecutive three-pointers for California to break open a one-point game midway through the second half.

Freshman O.J. Mayo scored 34 points for the Trojans but missed seven of 10 three-pointers.
