Old Home Town – 25 years old

The eight candidates for the Lawrence school board had undergone a question-and-answer session with Lawrence Educational Association, which intended to endorse several of the office-seekers.

Under a policy being considered by the City Commission, Lawrence developers would have to pay 25 percent of the cost of a street, sewer or sidewalk improvement up front before they could fund the work through a city-approved special assessment. The policy was part of the city’s concern with the more than $1 million in special assessments the city had not been paid over the past several years.

A Kansas House committee passed a bill that would raise the price the city of Lawrence would have to pay for drawing water from Clinton Lake. The increase for the average householder would be about $14 a year.
