Beckett rules B.C.

Bosox hurler refuses to go easy

Boston's Josh Beckett winds up to pitch against Boston College. Beckett pitched the Red Sox to a 24-0 rout of B.C. Thursday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Josh Beckett and the World Series champions against a college team that has been practicing indoors all winter to escape the snow.

Cold start to spring break.

With a merciless Beckett throwing hard from the mound, the Red Sox were in October form during their exhibition opener Thursday as they routed Boston College, 24-0.

AL Rookie of the Year Dustin Pedroia hit a two-run double and a Boston split squad cruised.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re playing in a media game or a college team or facing big-league hitters. I actually told somebody that today,” Beckett said. “They told me, ‘You’re going to at least let somebody hit it.”‘

His response?

“No, I’m not going to let him hit it. I’m out there trying to do my job, and my job right now is to get in shape for the season,” last year’s AL Cy Young Award runner-up said.

The Red Sox held Boston College to one hit before their other split squad beat up on a local college team, too. Justin Masterson tossed two solid innings in a 15-0 victory over Northeastern.

At Vero Beach, Fla., the Dodgers made Joe Torre’s debut as their manager a success by scoring three in the ninth to beat Atlanta, 5-4.

Cubs second baseman Mark DeRosa underwent what the club deemed a successful procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat.

At Tucson, Ariz., closer Manny Corpas agreed to an $8,025,000, four-year contract with the Colorado Rockies that could be worth up to $22,775,000.
