Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 28, 1908: “President Roosevelt came out strongly for efforts to stamp out ‘rottenness and corruption’ during an emotional talk to the National Education Assn.’s annual meeting in Washington. He says he will ‘hammer away incessantly at wrongdoing’ and wants strong support from citizens ‘such as you teachers.’ : Whisky and beer valued at $1,000 was thrown onto the ground of the public square in Girard last evening. The liquor had been acquired in a series of local raids. : William Lynn, aged 102, died yesterday at his home in Berryton. He was the first settler in the Lynn Creek district and voted for Andrew Jackson in 1829. : A recent Supreme Court decision eliminates local efforts to hunt up untaxed property and bring up the assessments of tax-dodgers. A local program had been successful in bringing in many legal dollars that had been missing. Apparently some aspect of the operation was not legal, thus the court’s refusal to let it continue.”
