From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 26, 1908: “Congress is hesitating about ordering the motto ‘In God We Trust’ put back upon our coins, possibly because of a fear that bankers and trust companies hit by the recent panic may take it as a personal reference to a lack of trust in them. : The 1908 edition of the N.W. Ayer Newspaper Directory shows that the state of Kansas has 71 daily newspapers with The World listed as ninth (4,103 subscribers) on the table of size. Tops in the state is the Topeka Capital with 23,958 subscribers and next is the Wichita Eagle with 21,791.”
