Police seek information on shooting of girl, 5

February 25, 2008

— A 5-year-old girl is in critical condition following a possible gunshot wound to the head. Emergency response crews from Leavenworth County and Sherman Township were dispatched to a home on the 12400 block of 170th Street, east of Linwood, at 4:40 p.m. Saturday, responding to a 911 call.

Leavenworth County Sheriff David Zoellner said the girl and her two brothers were playing in their yard when the boys heard a noise that sounded like a clap. The girl fell to the ground, and the boys called their father, who found the girl bleeding from the head. The girl was unconscious by the time medics arrived.

The girl was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where she remained in critical condition Sunday night.

Zoellner said an investigation is under way, but the sheriff's office does not believe the injury was the result of a crime. He said there is no suspect at this time and urged anyone with information to call the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office detective unit at (913) 758-4082.

If it is a gunshot wound, it sounds like a crime to me. Somebody would have discharged a gun in that direction. If so they probably don't even realize what they have done. Let's all pray that she pulls through.

my prayers to the family that this child will heal quickly! However, im with you godfather....if she was shot in the head then there is a crime, even if its as innocent as someone hunting and fired a shot in the wrong direction, but I just hope the child pulls through and is no worse for the wear.

My thoughts and prayers are with the little girl and her family. Such a terrible incident.

Sheriff Zoelnner is such an idiot and hopefully will not be reelected this year. There certainly is a crime, the question is whether it was intentional or not.

Hang in there kiddo!

DRsmith 9 years, 11 months ago crime? Did he really say that?

jmb 9 years, 11 months ago

It should be worked as a crime until it can be proven otherwise. However, without knowing any of the facts it is likely that in that area it could be a shot fired by a hunter, A large caibre hunting projectile can travel up to several miles if it does not hit a solid object. I would hope that the little girl was not a target. Only a complete investigation will reveal what really happened. If there is a projectile a balistics match might be indentified. jb

jmb...not saying it was intentional but isn't discharging a firearm in an unsafe/reckless manner a crime?

I hope they found whoever is responsible for this. My friend's dog was shot to death by hunters in her back yard. There should be a law that prevents hunting within so many feet of someone's back yard.

I was raised on guns. My brother and I knew how to use guns when we were 10 years old. But we had a different attitude towards them then many of our friends who were not raised with guns. When they got a gun in their hands they used them like they were toys. After hunting with them one time, we never did again. Real hunters and sportsmen (or women) have a special respect for firearms and know how to use them properly. Regardless of what the NRA says, I think we need to tighten up our gun laws. I just don't trust people like Barbara Boxer to do that for me. This is a tragedy that happens everyday in the inner cities of America. Careless and irresponsible use of firearms.

jayhawklawrence...............You made some good points here. Just maybe if kids nowadays were taught at a young age on the use of a gun, there would be more respect when they are older. If this could happen, maybe they would respect a human life more. There's no way I am saying all kids pertain to this. Maybe this could be a way to reduce future crimes. Who know's. It's bad enough when crime is done intentionally, there's no excuse for negligence. Parents are the ones that need to step forward and teach there kids about fireaems.

there are bullet proof backpacks for kids?? Get a grip Windlass! I hope to god this was an accident and God be with this family because this is a complete tragedy! I have kids but would never think of putting a bullet proof back pack on them and unfortunatley, it wouldn't have saved her from the bullet.

KMBC 9 has an article worth reading. I have some thoughts on this. Just curious what everybody else thinks.

I am beginning to believe this was a deliberate act. With livestock, dogs, and now Katherine. I just can't believe this many stray bullets could hit so many targets. This is a bad cituation for this area. Homeowners all around this area need to install video cameras. If neighbors get together, they can get all angles needed. Maybe I am thinking wrong, but something needs to be tried. There is a murder in the woods.

I have been touched by your comments. I know and love the family personally. we are as close as family. Katherine is a fight. the latest news is that she has show "purposeful movement" on both her left and right side. she is off of the oxygen and today when they were cleaning the tubes, she coughed (good sign) earlier she was getting a sponge bath and she opened her eyes and tried to wipe away the sponge. they are thinking of removing bone fragmens from where the bullet entered. she is being weaned off live support and today they fed her with a feeding tube because she is too week to chew, The famiy is cautiously optimistic. Dad has worked in Hospitals and knows how grave the situation is, but Katherine has alread surprised her doctors and shown improvement. the siblings are holing together, taking care of each other. THis is the nicest family you could ever hope to know. there is a Katherine Cook trust fund at pray for a miracle... pray for the family to have peace again in their lives... Pray for God's will to be done. Even if you have never prayed before, just ask the Lord to give us a miracle if it be apart of His will , then close in Jesus' name amen. She has already shocked the doctors! Also, we need to pray that the responsible peron will feel the strength to come forward and accept responsibility. The family needs this closure. The woods need to be safe again, These children need to feel that they can play agian in their own yard. Pray for them

As with Cookie, I am a personal friend of the family. We are hoping for a miracle, and are constantly praying for Katherine's fight. She's a strong girl, and she evidently is proving herself! Definitely pray for the family, they also are in need of the comfort as they are fighting this as well. They are strong individuals, and a strong family, but they need prayer as well! Thank you all for your comments and your prayers!
