Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 25, 1908: “In the absence of a coroner, Justice of the Peace John Clark this morning summoned a coroner’s jury in the case of David Fantroy, who was murdered in his home here Saturday night. The sheriff’s force is working blindly on the case, without much of any clue. There is no evidence of who committed the crime. : Congress passed a law saying all telegraphers should not work more than nine hours a day and now railroads in particular are added to their telegraphy forces to meet the new order and improve safety conditions. : Are insurance companies inspired too much by a passion to be big? That question is being asked as more annual reports come in showing the mushrooming of many big companies. Some say the size cuts down on the kind of service the public deserves.”
