Veritas boys take fifth, girls settle for fourth

? The Veritas Christian girls fell to rival Topeka Cair Paravel in the third-place game of the KCAA Tournament on Saturday.

Kristie Tiegreen led all scorers with 26 points, and Veritas led by nine with four minutes to play. But a few Cair Paravel three-pointers late and two free throws with five seconds remaining proved to be the difference.

“Being big rivals, we knew each other well, and this one could have gone either way,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said.

In boys action, Michael Kay and Nate Scott scored 10 points apiece, and Veritas defeated St. Mary’s Academy, 44-40, on Saturday for fifth place in the KCAA Tournament.

Veritas finished 9-14.

“We had our ups and downs,” Veritas coach Doug Bennett said. “Sometimes we played to our ability, and sometimes we didn’t. We’re headed in the right direction.”

Jeremiah Johnson and Ethan Scott scored eight points apiece for Veritas.
