Humane Society brings big name to concert

Lawrence Humane Society is having a benefit concert today featuring Les Gilliam and the Silver Lake Band.

About 400 people are expected to attend the event.

“We’ve had people from Branson call, people from Missouri, people from southeast Kansas,” said Midge Grinstead, director of the humane society.

Though the humane society receives donated goods, it’s never enough to get by, Grinstead said. She said the shelter uses a pallet of cat litter every three days, and 24 rolls of paper towels and 12 gallons of bleach a day. The benefit proceeds will help cover those costs.

The event will start with a chuck wagon dinner catered by Bigg’s BBQ at 5 p.m. at Abe & Jake’s Landing, 8 E. Sixth St.

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., entertainment will be provided by Les Gilliam and the Silver Lake Band.

Reservations are required. Tickets are $25 each or $40 for two. For more information, call 843-6835 or visit www.lawrencehumane.org.
