From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 23, 1908: “W.J. Bryan is in Topeka today where he will address the state Democratic club at its annual banquet. More than 1,000 tickets have been sold. Then Bryant, the Democratic presidential favorite, will be in Lawrence for a talk tomorrow night on ‘The Prince of Peace.’ Robinson Gymnasium at KU will be packed for that and many will have to be turned away. All tickets are gone and admission will not be allowed without a ticket. : The subject of a local chautauqua this summer continues to simmer and the local ministerial alliance is reported to be considering taking up the issue and sponsoring it. There seems to be general favor for the event. : Lawrence is peculiarly fortunate to have William Jennings Bryan, the noted churchman and probable Democratic presidential candidate, come here. Whether he succeeds in politics or not, he is an outstanding churchman who is a leader along the path to public morals.”
