UN extends peacekeeping mission in Somalia

? The U.N. Security Council authorized African peacekeepers Wednesday to continue operating in Somalia for six months while the United Nations mulls taking over those duties.

The unanimously approved resolution likely delays the council authorizing any U.N.-led peacekeeping force there for half a year. It urges African nations to provide financial support, personnel, equipment and services to the African Union peacekeeping force that started deploying in March to help stabilize Somalia.

The force in the Horn of Africa nation is authorized to have 8,000 troops, but now includes only 1,800 Ugandans and an advance team of almost 200 Burundians.
