Old Home Town – 100 years ago
From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 21, 1908: “Col. B.B. Cox, the talented woman officer of the Salvation Army who is at present in charge of this province, will hold a special meeting in the Congregational Church here next Sunday. A series of local meetings to aid the Army will follow. : A meeting of representatives of some 12 Christian Young People’s societies was held last night at the YMCA and an effort is under way to discuss plans and draft a constitution for a federation of all such societies in Lawrence. : The American battleship squadron making a world tour has reached Lima, Peru. Sailors are to get a shore leave and a national holiday has been declared by Peru. There are 16 battleships in the American squadron. : The Lyric Theater here is certainly against a run of hard luck. Within six weeks it has been the victim of two fires, neither of which originated in the theater, but in adjoining structures.”
