Development plan for Quarry Park discussed

Commissioners generally said they liked the idea of allowing a proposed single-family development to use adjacent undeveloped park ground to serve as a stormwater detention area.

Local architect Allen Belot has proposed using a portion of Quarry Park to serve as a detention area for a 42-unit single family housing development on the west side of the 1300 block of Iowa Street. Belot said his project would help bring the little-used and unmarked park to life. He would incorporate a trail system between park and the development, and the detention areas could be made into a unique water feature.

Several neighbors in the area expressed concern that they hadn’t heard enough about the proposed project. Commissioners assured them that the entire project would face public hearings at both the Planning Commission and City Commission in the future. Tuesday’s item only was to brief commissioners on the unique proposal, and commissioners did not take any binding action.
