Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Feb. 17, 1908: “The fire department was busy over the weekend, responding to three fires. Damage in all was, fortunately, small and the total loss for the three blazes has been listed at little more than $15. Quick action, we are told, prevented more sizable losses. : Plans to send Kansas natural gas to St. Louis at a profit to our state seems likely to be approved although many details need to be worked out. : A local man who got frustrated with his gas service tore out his meter and smashed it. He says he taught the meter a lesson since it hasn’t registered a foot of gas usage since. There is no mention of the danger of explosion, so he was lucky.”
