Desperation three lifts OU over Tech

? The final play didn’t go exactly the way Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel envisioned when he called it during a timeout with 10 seconds remaining and his Sooners down a point against Texas Tech on Saturday.

But sometimes a play succeeds no matter how awry the plan goes.

Although the play was designed for Austin Johnson, Oklahoma’s David Godbold hit a deep three-pointer with 1.4 seconds remaining to lead Oklahoma past Texas Tech 66-64 on Saturday.

“I wish we could say we drew it up like that,” Capel said.

Trailing 64-63, Oklahoma called timeout with 10 seconds left to set up the final play. Godbold inbounded to Johnson, who finished with 20 points. Johnson looked for a shot but couldn’t beat a Texas Tech double team. He passed back to Godbold, who hit the three from about six feet behind the line.

Texas Tech coach Pat Knight commended his players on defending the play well and leaving the low-percentage shot open rather than giving up the easy basket.

“We trapped the ball. You want Godbold,” Knight said. “We were not leaving (Tony) Crocker and (Austin) Johnson. We played that perfect.”

Johnson made six three-pointers in the game, and Crocker had hit three last month against the Red Raiders.

“I was pretty confident that it was on line. It looked straight, and I was thinking in my head, because I kind of shot it high, ‘Please, just please go in or give them a chance for us to get a tip-in,'” Godbold said.

Godbold finished with eight points, while Blake Griffin grabbed 17 rebounds for Oklahoma.

Tech gave one final heave but Martin Zeno missed on a well-guarded three-pointer as time expired.

The Red Raiders lost their first game at home since suffering a 61-59 loss to Nebraska more than one year ago.

Tech is 1-3 since Knight took over for his father after Bob Knight retired.

“The bottom line is we had the effort, but we just dont have the smarts,” Pat Knight said. “They’re just not playing smart basketball at times.”
