KU Horn Ensemble to perform annual recital

The KU Horn Ensemble will present its annual recital, titled “Tribute to Lowell Shaw,” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

The program will pay tribute to Shaw, longtime member of the Buffalo Philharmonic and world-famous composer and arranger of horn ensemble music.

Shaw may be most renowned for his collection of works, “Fripperies,” and he also has written outstanding transcriptions of Bach, Wagner, Tchaikovsky and Handel in addition to his own original pieces. His publishing house, The Hornet’s Nest, has published many original compositions by other composers, several of whom the KU Horn Ensemble will cover in their recital.

Pieces from the evening’s program will include an original work written for the horn ensemble by Kansas University graduate Joe Eidson, as well as works of Kerkorian, Humperdinck, Wagner and Tchaikovsky. The recital will close with one of Shaw’s most famous works from “Fripperies,” titled “Barbershop.”

The show, which will take place in Swarthout Recital Hall on Kansas University’s campus, is free. For more information, call 864-3436.
