Proposed Kidd trade remains in limbo

Jason Kidd remains a Net and could through at least the weekend.

The blockbuster deal that would have sent Kidd to Dallas on Wednesday and was a Devean George signature away from being brought to the league office for its approval continues to be in limbo.

“Devean George is still contemplating what he thinks is in his best interests,” Nets president Rod Thorn said.

One Nets source still believes there’s better than a 50 percent chance this deal will get done. Another said he was “surprised” it hasn’t been completed yet.

It’s All-Star weekend, which means the NBA office essentially is shut down. So if something gets agreed upon it may not be finalized until Monday. But right now, it’s in George’s hands.

As the teams were preparing for a conference call with the NBA, George blocked the trade by exercising a provision in his contract.

The forward, who would make about $2.5 million this season with his trade kicker, does not want to relinquish his “Early Bird rights.” This provision of the salary cap allows the Mavericks to pay him more money than any other team if they re-sign him this summer, but after this, it’s doubtful they will.

The Nets and Mavericks asked George and his agent, Mark Bartelstein, to reconsider so the deal could go through. Both sides spoke to Bartelstein several times Thursday.

When reached by telephone, Bartelstein said, “There’s really nothing new,” and he didn’t expect his client to change his mind.

“I’m not anticipating that to be honest with you,” Bartelstein said.

George may have a change of heart. He isn’t very popular in Dallas right now, probably not with owner Mark Cuban, who signs the checks, and certainly not with the fans.

In Dallas’ home win over Portland on Wednesday, George was booed by fans wanting Kidd and shot 0-for-11. If George doesn’t budge, he can expect more catcalls.

George started Thursday’s game at Phoenix, the last game before the All-Star break and potentially his last as a Maverick.

“I honestly don’t know what we’re going to do,” Bartelstein said. “He wanted to get ready to play. That’s where we left it.”

In the proposed trade, the Nets would get Devin Harris, George, DeSagana Diop, Jerry Stackhouse, Maurice Ager, 2008 and 2010 first-round draft picks and $3 million for Kidd and Malik Allen. In a second move, Dallas would get Antoine Wright for a future No. 2 pick.
